Digitally subtitled anime.

Originally the bane of every legitimate fansubber, digisubs eventually took over the old VHS-and-snail-mail system as soon as technology made decent-quality digisubs feasible. This happened around 2001-2002. In the end, with the most popular series seeing turn-around times (airing of show in Japan to completed fansub) of 12 hours, the p2p protocol Bittorrent making it easier for anyone to host fansubs, and video editing tools making it cheap and easy to make high-quality subs (with krazy karaoke effects), the VHS sub was eventually killed just about dead.

However, the VHS trade is not dead entirely, with old-school and obscure seemingly long-dead series available only there. The largest VHS distributor still in action (as of late 2005) was Soyokaze Fansubs.

The thrill of receiving VHS fansubs in the mail remains unmatched, however.
