Historical Note

This puts the confirmed origin of UCJAS as far back as 1996, though our club charter is from 1994, and historians have speculated as the existance of a UCJAS as far back as 1967 (which consisted of 4 guys watching the same 5 episodes of Astro Boy every once in a while). It also confirms historians' theory that guestbooks stopped being popular in 1999. This could make for interesting reading...kind of a UCJAS Chat Log, and we all know how fun those are to read.

It's good to see that some any people are intrested in them.

(although I'm still a stickler for not using the term
"otaku" since I returned from Japan, yare yare!). I think
your selection of series is fantastic, and I urge you to
continue the good work. All I might suggest, is to perhaps
check out my favourite series, Rurouni Kenshin (Wandering
Masterless Warrior Kenshin), by contacting www.concentric.net/~Mibu
to obtain fansubs or view some clips at takanimegumi.fsn.net.
I think this would be something worth watching for anyone
who likes intelligent anime, as you seem to. Once again,

well-written and well-thought out:) I have to say that I haven't seen
some of the series, but I TOTALLY agree with the x/1999 article.
That is a great movie, BUT it does really compress the story. I show
anime here at Bryn Mawr and people seem to absolutely love all
the Miyazaki films I have shown. Can't wait to see Child's Toy!

Also, if y'all are into no-trans direct-from-Japan anime, check out "Gaogaigar". It's a new "stock-footage" show from the people who produced "Gundam".

of Earth. As far as I can recall it was about a boy looking
for his parents. What was most striking about this film was
that the spaceship was a train. The engine that drove it was
modeled after an old steam locomotive. Would you by chance
know the name of this film. Thank you, Andy Allen.

THE NAME OF A "JACK AND THE BEANSTOCK" TYPE MOVIE THAT
I SAW (ON HBO) IN THE EARLY 1980'S. I REMEMBER THE
CHARACTERS ALL "LOOKED" LIKE THE CHARACTERS
IN "SPEED RACER", SO I'M ASSUMING IT'S A FORM OF
JAPANESE ANIMATION. THE GIANT'S NAME WAS "TULIP" AND
HIS MOTHER WAS WICKED. IF ANYONE CAN HELP ME OUT WITH A
NAME OR WHERE I COULD LOOK, I'D REALLY APPRECIATE IT
- THE MOVIE WOULD BRING BACK A LOT OF MEMORIES FOR ME
AND MY FAMILY.

THANKS A LOT AND I USED TO LIVE IN GURNEE!

I just wanted to say that you have a Great page going here, and I am glad to see that you are managing to have weekly showings.
I also would like to tell you about AnimeIowa.... We here in Iowa City are having an Animation convention on Sept 19th-21st 1997. It is currently looking like we are going to be able to have three or four video rooms up and running 24hrs a day, a nice siz ed charity art show/ auction
A Costume contest, Panel discussions, Many dealers, and just about anything else we can think of. Since we understand that college Anime fans have limited budgets to work with, we are offering the following deals to members of other Anime clubs. If you re gister as a group, we can cut the price down to
$15.00 per person. This will last until March 31st. Also, we have a deal with the hotel for rooms that weekend... They are charging us a flat rate of 70.00 per night, (This means that If you dont mind putting five or six or more in a room.. It's cheap.) < br> Anyway, Enough of my rambling.. If You want to attend, you can send Names and $$ to AnimeIowa 97 P.O. box 5303 Coralville, IA 52241. Also, you can check out our new web page by going to www.sflis.org (That is our main groups homepage.. we are off of it. )
Hope to see you at our con, and If I can get away some thursday, I'll gather up a group to roadtrip to one of your shows. :)-[-{

understand what we've been viewing, but have no idea where
to find such a thing. Do you know of any Japanese cultural
associations or any other organization that might offer
either 1.) a course in the language, or 2.) some evening
