Monica's Anime & Manga Favorites
ANIME:
1) Neon Genesis Evangelion
There are TONS of webpages devoted to this series, so I won't bother with a description. This one is definitly a masterpiece.
2) Vision of Escaflowne
It falls in the "High school girl gets transported to a fantasy land", "Mecha", and "Romance" genres, but it is much, much more. It is almost an existential look on fate. Not to mention that the soundtrack is one of the best.
Monica's review of Escaflowne.
3) S. K. Utena
The direct translated title is "Girl Revolution Utena". Directed by the guy that did
SailorMoon (the better version), this story deviates from the original manga, but takes the story to a whole new perspective. It kind of falls in the "Magical Girls" genre, but the worthy aspect of it is its very bold and abstract art style.
MANGA
1) Please Save My Earth
PSME is a beautifully haunting epic about the relationships within a group of friends that dates back a whole life time. At first the plot seems absurd, which made it even more fasinating when you realize that you've became a total believer. The story contains a lot of depth and 3 dimensionality.
2) RG Veda
The best of CLAMP storytelling to date, RG Veda is a masterpiece with multiple plot layers that keeps you interested up to the very last page. Loosely based on Buddist mythology, this story uses the various Gods to weave a story of conflicting interests and passions.
3) Blade of the Immortal
BOTI, a story of war-time Japan, is intented for more mature audiences. In here, a man who is incapable of dying must slay a thousand men before he may rest in peace. The awesome artstyle of this manga lets you almost see the movements of the characters as they battle to the death.
4) Yakumo Tatsu
"Legend of the Eight Clouds." Damn, how come I always pick these titles that are so hard to summarize? This story contains: bishounen & more bishounen, urban legends and traditional folklores, disfunctional families, action & adventure, and ghosts and spirit channelers.
